Cherry Street Health Services has partnered with Touchstone innovare and Proaction Behavioral Health Alliance to build the Heart of the City Health Center, located in the Heartside district of Grand Rapids. This facility will provide access to integrated mind/body care, and increase county-wide primary health care capacity for people with low-incomes.
This is an exciting project for three reasons:
- The Heart of the City Health Center will replace the overcrowded, inefficient Grand Rapids Pediatrics and Ferguson Adult Health Center facilities. It will also triple capacity for vision services and include the addition of dental care, mental health services and substance abuse services. The total project will serve 13,000 who are currently not receiving health care, or receiving care insufficient for their needs.
- More than 85% of the project funding is coming from outside the community. This is an enormous benefit for our community, which continues to feel the impacts of a struggling local economy.
- This project will be a national model for integration of care, treating people holistically in one place for their physical as well as mental health needs.
Additional project benefits:
- Jobs: This project will bring almost 100 new professional jobs and maintain over 200 current jobs in the Heartside district.
- Increased capacity: Approximately 8,000 additional patients will receive first-class services through this expansion project, bringing the total served to 17,000.
- Environmental impact: This project is targeted for LEED certification. It will also clean up a brownfield site in downtown Grand Rapids.
- Quality care: The new facility will ease severe overcrowding, reduce operating expenses, and dramatically increase availability of services, especially to children.
- A new model: Altarum Institute and Health Management Associates are consulting with the team to create a curriculum of integrated physical and behavioral health care delivery. In addition, all patient information will be easily shared through an electronic medical records system, and staff will work in treatment teams for people with co-occurring conditions.
